Finca El Sapo Monastrell 2018 'Full-bodied power and gloriously smooth'
700 metres above sea level in the dry, rocky hills of south-eastern Spain you'll find the vineyards of Jumilla. The grape for this wine is Monastrell (known in France as Mouvèdre), one that yields concentrated red juice. Here the vines - a mix of ancient and new - are harvested by hand before fermenting in steel tanks for six to eight days before a ninth month stint for natural clarification. The wine is then bottled unrefined to retain maximum flavour. And what you get in a glass is a bright and juicy fruit with the added power of those old vines. There's an aroma of leather and spice and it's full-bodied and very smooth.
