Buitenverwachting SB 2021 'Dry, formidable, full-bodied Sauvignon Blanc'
Buitenverwachting Sauvignon Blanc 2021
This wine is from an historic wine estate of South Africa, one that has its origins in 1685 when Governor Simon van der Stel planted 750 hectares of vines in Constantia, Cape Town. This particular winery is one of five divided from the original estate and is now owned by the Mueller family, who have restored some ancient buildings and have ambition that is displayed in the name of this wine. Buitenverwachting means 'beyond expectation'. So is it?
Well, the grapes are from a mix of vines aged between three and 16 years old, all Sauvignon Blanc. After picking in February and early March and some skins are left in the juice after pressing for 12 hours after which fermentation occurs for for 21 days.
The wine is pale-lemon coloured, has a bouquet of green figs with a hint of gooseberry. And to drink: dry, full-bodied with a lingering finish. It's formidable. And to be honest I expected that...Delicious with roast chicken, salmon and rice dishes. And an excellent aperitif.
