Buitenverwachting Cab Sauv/Merlot 2019 'Epic, great-tasting Sunday lunch dream'
Buitenverwachting Cabernet Sauvignon /Merlot 2019
This is a sister wine to the Buitenverwachting Sauvignion Blanc wine; from an historic wine estate of South Africa, one that has its origins in 1685 when Governor Simon van der Stel planted 750 hectares of vines in Constantia, Cape Town. This particular winery is one of five divided from the original estate and is now owned by the Mueller family, who have restored some ancient buildings and have ambition that is displayed in the name of this wine. Buitenverwachting means 'beyond expectation'.
The estate vineyards are in a cool spot in Constantia, shaded by Table Top Mountain. The grapes are harvested in early March and the juice fermented on the skins for 21 days. Then the wine is aged in French oak barrels for two years, during which time it undergoes a second malolactic fermentation.
The resulting wine is stylish and bright on the nose, with a hint of cassis. but it's on the palate that the magic happens. It's complex and structured with ripe fruit marrying a mineral nuance. What can I say: it's well tuned and fragrant. And I love it. Frankly it tastes expensive. So serve this wine - at Sunday lunch - and con your friends with your imagined wealth.
